Place Description

The Monteverde Community Fund began around a simple idea:
Together, we do more good.
We saw our community changing rapidly. The dairy economy had converted to tourism, and our population had grown to ~6,000 local residents and ~200,000 annual visitors attracted by the fascinating cloud forest and our welcoming community. We sought to equip ourselves to overcome challenges and seize opportunities associated with changes today and far into the future.

Since 2012 we have been harnessing resources from visitors, local businesses, Monteverde residents, and international foundations, to support the environmental, social and economic resilience of this beautiful, but fragile, coexistence of human community with endangered cloud forest.

To date, the Community Fund has financed 24 projects in economic, social, and environmental sectors, and trained and supported the teams behind them. We are proud to support an array of efforts valued by our neighbors and stakeholders–from municipal wastewater treatment plans, to reforestation projects, to movement and exercise programs.

We also provide fiscal agency to 10 grassroots organizations, so they can focus on their areas of expertise. These organizations pursue high-level impact in areas like climate action, solid waste management, literacy and education, and theater arts.

During the economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Monteverde Community Fund has been one of several core institutions leading the local emergency response, as well as the principal channel for funds.

During its short tenure, the Monteverde Community Fund has become a force that magnifies and enhances the work of Monteverde’s engaged citizenry.
